West Virginia - Day 3

Day 3 of my West Virginia adventure. I had no swings planned for today. Instead, I took a train ride from Elkins. I picked this particular train because it stopped at one of the waterfalls on the waterfall trail (High Falls of the Cheat). I had one meeting this morning, which worked out perfectly with my schedule. I headed to the train station and found parking across the street with plenty of time before we were supposed to board. I had paid extra to be in the panoramic car (I think it was a $10 difference). I sat across from the nicest couple from Charleston (Donna and Mike). We chatted a bit and exchanged some travel stories. After I told them about my close call the first day of the trip, they gave me some sage advice. They told me that their rule is that if they don’t know where they’re sleeping by 2pm to stop and figure it out. I will use this rule in all of my future travels!!
When we were almost at the falls, they transferred the locomotive to the back of the train and pushed us the rest of the way. It was a short walk to the falls and there was plenty of time to take some pictures. I had a lovely chat with our train guide (I don’t remember her name) and then it was time to head back. On the way back to Elkins, our car was at the back of the train. They turned the lights on at the back of the train, so we got to see the inside of the tunnel that had just been dark on the way there.
We got back to Elkins close to 4pm. I had enough time to drive to Audra State Park and walk along the boardwalk under the Alum Cave overhang. Then I headed back to the hotel, took a quick shower, and went to dinner (I had planned ahead and made reservations this time). I ate at The Forks, which was a lovely restaurant with a beautiful view. Everything was delicious. I know that I’m here chasing ALMOST Heaven swings, but the white chocolate blueberry crème brûlée was PURE heaven!!
