Day 7 of my West Virginia Adventure. I started off the day going to the swing at Pipestem Resort State Park. I probably should have tried to hit this one yesterday, but I had heard about an aerial tram at Pipestem, so I thought I’d be spending more time in the area. Turns out the tram isn’t open yet, so I had to cross that off my list. My next stop was the swing at Bluestone State Park. That one was pretty much off the side of the road near the Bluestone Dam. Then I drove a little bit off my route to see the John Henry Statue. From there, I went to the North House Museum. That ended up being a guided tour, so it took a little longer than I expected, but the tour guide was very knowledgeable and the tour was quite enjoyable. I had found out that the West Virginia State Far was going on, and it was pretty close to the North House Museum, so I decided to check it out. It just so happened that it was dollar day, so it only cost me a dollar to get in! I walked around a bit and checked out the building with all of the fair entries. Amazing quilts, crocheted blankets, cross-stitch, paintings, photography… there was so much to see! I grabbed a strawberry lemonade at the fair and then headed back to my car to continue my day.
On the way to the next swing, I came across a mother deer and her fawn and was lucky enough to capture a very sweet moment. There was an Overlook tower at the Droop Mountain Swing… what a view! I have to say that as hard as it’s been to find these swings, they really did pick some very scenic spots for them!
My last swing of the day was at Big Ditch Lake. From there, I decided to backtrack to Whitaker Falls (one of the Waterfalls that I had skipped earlier in the trip). It took a lot longer to get there than I had anticipated, with the roads being narrow and not well-maintained in some places. I wonder about people who live here. How far do the kids have to travel to get to school? How close is the closest supermarket? It’s one thing to be driving these roads for a week and a half on my little adventure, but I can’t imagine having to travel this far to get to things on a regular basis.
